The upgrade for image and location extension will be completed later in 2022.
Extensions are being upgraded to enable new features and reduce the complexity of extension creation and management. The upgrade involves a new feature through which you can pause your extensions. This change won’t affect the performance of your ads or extensions.
This article explains any differences that you may notice during this time period, and how to switch between upgraded and legacy reporting in the UI if you also use the API or Editor to manage extensions.
A few features that have been deprecated as part of the extensions upgrade are:
- Device preference for mobile in all extensions
- Start and end date in call extensions
- Ad schedules in app extensions
- Start and end time and ad schedule in price and structure snippets
Summary vs table view
You may see a discrepancy between extension data on the summary and the table view. That’s because the table view doesn’t combine data from before and after the reporting upgrade, whereas metrics on the summary view do combine legacy and upgraded data.
After the data migration is complete, you won’t be able to see legacy data on the extensions page. But, you’ll still be able to access it in your 'Reports'.
Upgraded vs. legacy extensions
If you use the API or Editor to create upgraded extensions during the migration period, you may see separate views for legacy and upgraded extensions.
- Historical stats for legacy extensions will be available in the 'Reports' page through August 2022.
- Reporting for upgraded extensions will continue to be available in the Extensions table view. Once the switch to upgraded extension is complete, legacy extension data will no longer be available in the Extensions table view.
Access legacy data during migration
If your account has both legacy and upgraded extensions, you’ll see separate views for reporting in the Extensions table. You can toggle between upgraded and legacy reporting for individual extensions:
- Click Ads and extensions.
- Click Extensions.
- If you’re using the table view, select the dropdown near the filter bar
at the top of the table to switch between 'upgraded' and 'legacy' extensions.
- If you’re using the summary view, click the toggle to switch between 'upgraded' and 'legacy' extensions.
- If you’re using the table view, select the dropdown near the filter bar
You can also view reporting for both legacy and upgraded extensions in the 'Extensions' table via the dropdown menu.
- Click Ads and extensions.
- Click Extensions.
- Using the table view, click the 'All' dropdown menu.
- If you want to view legacy extensions, select All.
- If you want to view upgraded extensions, select All (upgraded).
Access legacy data post-migration
Once the migration has been completed, you'll only be able to view historical stats for legacy extensions in the 'Reports' page.
- Click Reports.
- Click Predefined reports (Dimensions).
- If you want to view historical stats, select Extensions.
- If you want to view post-migration stats, select Extensions (upgraded).
How to pause your extensions
You can now pause your upgraded extensions. Follow the steps below to pause an extension:
- Click Ads and extensions.
- Click Extensions.
- Click into the summary card based on your extension type.
- Click Add Filter next to the filter icon
and select 'Extension status: All but removed' as your filter.
- Select the extension that you want to pause by clicking on the tick box next to it.
- Click Edit, then click
Pause.
- The pause symbol
will appear next to the particular extension and a message that says 'Pausing your extension' will be displayed at the bottom of the page.
- The pause symbol
Tracking upgraded extensions using ValueTrack parameters in URLs
All ValueTrack parameters will continue to function when used in URLs in upgraded extensions except for {feeditemid}
. Instead, use {extensionid}
to link any final URL, tracking template or custom parameter to an upgraded extension. The {feeditemid}
parameter will no longer return any value once the legacy extension is migrated to an upgraded extension.
The migration procedure won't change occurrences of {feeditemid}
into {extensionid}
for you. You must update any URLs that utilise the {feeditemid}
parameter to also include the {extensionid}
parameter. Doing so will ensure that you're tracking clicks to either type of extension. However, only one of these fields will be populated when a click occurs.
